Notice to Residents Regarding Mountain Pine Beetle Control
According to the Colorado State Forestry Service, as of the fall of 2025, Jefferson County has been experiencing elevated levels of infestation from mountain pine beetles. When forests are stressed by drought and warm temperatures, such as have been experienced this winter season, populations of these deadly insects can explode to epidemic levels and be detrimental to forest health.
Unfortunately, once a tree is infested, there is little that can be done to save it. There are, however, some measures that can be taken to prevent mountain pine beetle infestation before it occurs, namely preventative spraying and the application of Verbenone packets. The recommended timing for effective prevention depends on the method, but is typically between May and mid-June, before mountain pine beetles emerge in the summer.
Further information about Verbenone packets can be found online here
As a preventative measure, the Forest Hills Metropolitan District is contracting with Sylvan Forestry, a forestry consultant, to complete a survey of the pine trees in the District’s common area tracts to determine what the current impact of the mountain pine beetle might be. Subsequent mitigation actions will be implemented as needed.
Sylvan Forestry is also offering to provide consultations for homeowners to provide assessments and recommendations for both wildfire hazards and mountain pine beetle mitigation on private property. If interested, please see the flyer linked here from Sylvan Forestry for pricing and contact information.
